The Joint Center for Housing Studies (JCHS) of Harvard University published a study of the current state of renting which outlines the economic climate, household data and rental stock figures. As of 2013 there are 43 million rental households throughout the U.S. and the demand is estimated to increase another 4 million in the next ten years. The demand is exacerbated by the current deficiency of affordable rental housing stock and low incomes, leaving renters severely cost burdened and paying, in many cases, more than half of their income on rent. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in Unincorporated Broward

On Friday, December 6th, the Broward County Housing Finance and Community Development Division was the proud host of a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of 16 new single family homes in the Broward County unincorporated neighborhoods of Roosevelt Gardens and Washington Park. The new homes were made possible by the Federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Disaster Recovery Initiative (DRI) Replacement Housing Program and the Broward County Housing Finance and Community Development Division. Miami-Dade Receives Community Investment Funding

Citi Foundation and the Low Income Investment Fund have awarded Neighborhood Housing Services of South Florida (NHSSF) $250,000 to incentivize economic growth in Miami-Dade County. The area of focus is the low income area of northwest 79th Street corridor which has a myriad of residences and businesses but lacks a cohesive thriving economy. “NHSSF will focus its efforts on using current transit infrastructure to connect neighborhood residents to jobs in the south Florida region; creating new affordable housing; and revitalizing the retail, commercial, and social services resources in the area.” More…

Enterprise Community Partners and the Urban Land Institute collaborated to study and report on the costs associated with the development of affordable housing. This November, the first installment of a series of briefs focused on housing costs was published. The objective of the reports is to provide reliable affordable housing development information to policy makers and developers which will aid in making effective local and federal resource choices.
