In January 2011, Broward County Parks and Recreation launched a pilot program to create campground host positions at two of the county park system's public campgrounds, Easterlin Park in Oakland Park and Markham Park in Sunrise. Quiet Waters Park in Deerfield Beach joined the program in April 2011, and T.Y. Park joined in December of 2012.
The program is designed to offer qualified couples and individuals campsites in exchange for providing certain services to the parks and their patrons. Each campground host may be called upon by park management to fulfill a variety of functions, from general assistance in the park office to basic maintenance tasks to hosting social activities. The hosts remain on call should campers need after-hours assistance.
Like all other park volunteers, campground hosts undergo an application and screening process to ensure they are well suited to the position and are qualified to serve the public. Orientation and training are provided prior to the beginning of their assignments. Campground hosts must reapply if they wish to participate in the program for a subsequent season.
So far the program has been a success, with the management of all four participating parks reporting that their hosts have provided excellent service, and campers concurring, based on the feedback received via internal surveys. The program continues to be popular and successful as it is constantly praised by park managers, patrons, and the hosts themselves. Since the start of the program in January 2011, a total of 11 hosts have logged 4,014 hours as of July 2013.
