Construction of New Courthouse Officially Underway

On Tuesday, August 21, Broward County Commissioners and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the official groundbreaking of the new Broward County Courthouse. The ceremony took place at 8:30 a.m. on the first floor of the West Parking Garage on S.E. Sixth Street in Fort Lauderdale. Approximately 250 guests celebrated the historic milestone and listened to keynote speakers that included Broward County Mayor John E. Rodstrom, Jr., Commissioner Stacy Ritter, Commissioner Ilene Lieberman, City of Fort Lauderdale Mayor John P. "Jack" Seiler and Chief Judge Peter M. Weinstein. Courthouse Project Timeline

Construction activities continue through September including the beginning of foundation pile work, installation of concrete piles and underground electrical work. Installation of steel sheet piles along Courthouse Drive is anticipated the first week in October. The project timeline is updated continuously.

Parking/Traffic Updates

With demolition of the West Parking Garage underway, there will be impacts to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.

  • Installation of temporary barricades and traffic control devices on S.E. First Avenue-northbound traffic will be restricted while the southbound lane remains open.
  • Installation of temporary barricades and traffic control devices on Courthouse Drive-one eastbound lane will remain open.
  • Pedestrian traffic will be routed around the work area and courthouse users may experience dust and noise resulting from demolition activities.

1,000 Car Parking Garage

On August 17, 2012, a Notice to Proceed was issued to the Stiles Corporation for demolition activities at the site of the 1,000 car garage (old Comcast site). During the next couple of months (August 20 – October 31), miscellaneous demolition and site preparation will begin.
