2013: A Glance Back, A Look Forward

This past year has been an exciting, innovative period in BCL’s history. We’ve launched new e-services such as the Zinio Digital Magazine Newsstand and IndieFlix that provide enhanced information and entertainment opportunities for our customers. This year’s Summer Reading Program was a success with almost 22,000 registrations including children, teens and adults. BCL also partnered to provide free lunches to children during the summer, another great success that shows our importance as a community resource. Also this summer: new face-to-face classes in digital downloading of eBooks, music and eMagazines were added to keep up with the changing needs of our customers.

Affordable Care Act Workshops were presented in libraries countywide in keeping with Broward County’s 2013 “Year of the Neighbor” theme. AARLCC hosted the South Florida Book Fair in July, bringing prominent authors to South Florida; the Bienes Museum is currently highlighting Florida’s great railroads for the Viva Florida 500 finale and the Conference on Children’s Literature and Ashley Bryan Art Series featured children’s author Walter Dean Myers.

2013 was a memorable year for BCL, and I know 2014 will bring many exciting changes as we strive to make Broward County Libraries the model of the 21st century library: innovative, creative, flexible, inspiring and resource full.

Very Best,

Skye Patrick
Broward County Libraries Division Director
