Series I: Writings, 1952-1987 and no date (4.00 linear feet)

This series includes drafts of published and unpublished works, galleys for published works, and notebooks. Shaara's novels, plays, poems, screenplays, and short stories are arranged alphabetically by title. His early fiction was published in numerous fantasy and science fiction magazines. By the late 1950s and early 1960s, Shaara broadened his focus to include mainstream fiction and began publishing his work in Cosmopolitan, Redbook, and the Saturday Evening Post. He wrote four novels: The Broken Place, (1968); The Killer Angels, (1974); The Herald, (1977); and For Love of the Game, (published posthumously in 1991). Shaara's notebooks contain story ideas, character sketches, and drafts.

Shaara sold many of his short stories to magazines. Often the editors of these magazines would return the story, suggesting specific changes. Other times, they simply rejected the story. In response, Shaara would revise the original and submit a newly edited version with a different magazine. Within this series, see also references indicate multiple versions of the same story under different titles.

After completing his research, Shaara spent four years writing The Killer Angels while teaching at Florida State University. Although he was an established science fiction writer, it took him 18 months to sell his manuscript. When it was finally accepted, Shaara was asked to change the working title "The Glory of the Coming" to its present title. All fragments from the "The Glory of the Coming" can be found in The Killer Angels file folders. See his notebooks at the end of the series for additional ideas and drafts on The Killer Angels .

Correspondence and other printed materials placed with particular manuscripts were retained within the manuscript file folder. Details about these items are included with the manuscript description in the finding aid. Unidentified works are located after the alphabetized list of titles. When no title was available for a completed draft or larger fragment, the librarian used the first words of the manuscript to identify the work.

Additional materials related to items in this subseries may be found in Series III: Correspondence - - Agents and publishing activities; Series III: Correspondence - - Derivative works; Series III: Correspondence - - Professional activities; Series III: Correspondence - - General correspondence; Series IV: Professional papers; Series V: Financial and legal papers; Series VII: Clippings - - Reviews of Shaara's works; Series VIII: Printed matter; Series IX: Serials; Series XI: Maps.
