Library Time is Family Time
When the Pollard family – Mom Melinda, daughter English (12) and son Aiden (10) – moved to Broward a few years ago, they made the library one of their first stops. “We started going to Riverland and fell in love with the YS librarian, Mr. Michael (Bryant),” says Melinda. “He always had something fun going on for the kids. I made the library a hub for my family and our activities.”
When “Mr. Michael” moved to Tyrone Bryant Library, the Pollard family followed. “I joined their Friends of the Library because Michael does so much to connect to the community and it’s very inspiring,” explains Melinda.
For the Pollards, the library is a family affair. As a reading family, they go to pick up books. As a budget-savvy family, they hit the library for the latest free DVDs. Library staff keeps lists of the new DVDs to distribute and even flag down customers to let them know about the latest blockbusters.
But the library isn’t just for fun. When Melinda was laid off last spring, she used the library’s computers to search for and find a job, taking advantage of quiet and the lack of the distractions found at home.
“Broward County Library is doing a great job,” Melinda adds. “The budget may be cut but the services don’t diminish.”
 Historical Commission’s Brown Bag Lunch Program

The Broward County Historical Commission’s popular Brown Bag Lunch Program picks up after a summer break with two fascinating lecture/presentations. All programs begin at noon and are held in the Historical Commission Building.
Thursday, August 16, author Mary Wachob will discuss her book Myakka Mandate: Courage, Love and Peril of Florida’s Pioneer Women. The novel traces the journey of the women and their families who left Georgia to settle in Florida in the mid-1800s and chronicles their adventures and struggles in their new homes in Southwest Florida.
Thursday, September 21, Historian Helen Landers will present a program focusing on Broward County’s Hispanic Heritage. All programs are free.  September is National Sewing Month

In 1982, President Ronald Reagan declared September National Sewing Month “in recognition of the importance of home sewing to our nation.” Whether you’re a seasoned pro or are trying it for the first time, head to Broward County Library and learn more about sewing and other crafts such as applique and embroidery.

 Banned Books Week - Celebrate the Freedom to Read!

Since 1982, more than 11,000 books have been challenged, or an attempt has been made to remove or restrict them based on the objections of either an individual or group. In 2011, the top 10 list included titles such as To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee; The Hunger Games trilogy, by Suzanne Collins; Brave New World, by Aldous Huxley and the Gossip Girl series, by Cecily Von Ziegesar. Thanks to the commitment of librarians and teachers, parents and students as well as other concerned citizens, very few challenges are successful and most materials remain in public or school libraries.
Banned Books Week, held from September 30 through October 6, is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read.

Computer Classes for Seniors (Back to Top)
Broward County Library, in partnership with the OASIS Institute and the Broward Public Library Foundation, offer free computer classes at several locations. The OASIS Institute is a national non-profit organization that provides lifelong learning programs for adults age 50 plus. The OASIS Connections Technology program is an extensive, research-based technology skills education for mature adults.
Internet access and computer literacy skills are prerequisites for being an informed and engaged citizen in today’s digital age. Whether you are looking for a job, for information on health issues, or government assistance programs, Broward County Library provides the Internet access and computer literacy training.
Broward County Library has more than 1,900 public-use computers at locations countywide that you can use for free as well as offering free wireless internet at all locations.
