NATURE OF WORK

This is technical engineering work of a skilled nature.

Work involves responsibility for performing complex to difficult engineering field survey tasks and mathematical computations associated with field surveying and related office work. Duties require the applications of knowledge of the techniques and practices of field surveying. Assignments may be specific or general in nature, depending on the frequency of recurring tasks. They are received in oral or written form from a technical or professional superior. Work is reviewed for technical accuracy and correct location while in progress and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Functions as an instrumentperson on an engineering survey party; may act as party chief for intermittent periods.

Sets up, adjusts and operates a transit or level to locate established lines, points and angles or to secure or establish elevation points. Uses plane table and alidade to collect and note this data.

Makes necessary calculations from available data to establish the location and elevation of surface features; plots information by developing maps and charts.

Supervises and instructs rodmen.

Reduces field notes.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of standard terminology, techniques, and practices of engineering surveying.

Knowledge of mathematics including algebra, trigonometry and plane geometry.

Ability to make moderately complex mathematical computations accurately.

Ability to prepare maps, drawings, and charts from field notes.

Ability to engage in field work for extended periods and occasionally under adverse weather conditions as necessitated by work assignments.

Ability to understand and follow oral and writt en instuctions and sketches.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skill in the use and care of surveying equipment employed in the area of assignment.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school, including or supplemented by course work in engineering field surveying and mathematics; experience in field survey work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
