GRAPHICS DESIGNER II

NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled and advanced computer graphic work in design and production of brochures, newsletters, posters, visual aids, exhibits, logos and other collateral materials.

Work requires high level design skills, illustration capabilities and advanced print production skills involving four-color work. The incumbent may act as lead worker to subordinate designers. Work is performed under the direction of a supervisor but with considerable latitude and exercise of independent judgement.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from Graphics Designer I by the advanced level of graphics design work and greater experience requirements.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Performs advanced graphic design work in the creation of brochures, logos, newsletters, posters, novelty items, and other collateral materials.

Prepares freehand or computer-generated illustrations and technical drawings.

Scans drawings and retouches using computer programs.

Operates desktop publishing computer software programs, as well as computer graphic programs to design and create electronic artwork for printing.

Evaluates color keys and other vendor proofs.

Provides direction to printers during on-site press proofs.

Participates in planning meetings for high-visibility publications.

May act as lead worker to subordinate designers.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design, color and typography.

Considerable knowledge of print production including four-color process work.

Knowledge of the operation of a computer and the use of graphic design software programs.

Ability to create freehand or computer illustrations.

Ability to organize and coordinate multiple, time-sensitive assignments and maintain records.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school including or supplemented by college level course work in commercial art, graphic design or related field; considerable experience in commercial art, including experience in operating desktop publishing software programs; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
