NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled surveying work performed for the Port Everglades Construction Management and Planning Division.
Work involves responsibility for planning, coordinating supervising and participating in all necessary field survey assignments including construction layout, cross sectioning, soundings, horizontal and vertical controls, and subsurface survey. Position incumbent prepares accurate and complete field books and field notes of all survey work; calculating volumes, areas, and other calculations associated with survey work; and preparing legal descriptions of out leased land and easements. Incumbent also operates and maintains all Port owned equipment utilized in surveys and soundings. Work requires the application of knowledge of an advanced technical area of engineering, planning, construction management or a related field. Employee must be able to perform work using a high level of independent judgment. Work is assigned by a technical/ professional supervisor and may consist of oral or written instruction. Assignments are reviewed for technical accuracy while in progress and upon completion.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Supervises all necessary field survey work for the Construction Management and Planning Division including construction layout, cross sectioning, soundings, horizontal and vertical controls, and subsurface survey.
Prepares and maintains accurate and complete field books, sketches and field notes of all survey work.
Calculates volumes, areas, traverses, elevations, measurement of distances, setting of grades, and other calculations associated with survey work.
Prepares legal descriptions of out leased land and easements; computes pay quantities for cut and fill and dredging projects.
Operates and maintains all Port owned equipment for the preparation of survey and soundings; trains and instructs survey crew members on proper use and care of survey equipment.
Performs incidental assignments of construction inspection when required.
Performs drafting assignments manually and with the aid of computerized drafting equipment when required.
Performs other duties as required or assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of terminology, techniques and practices of surveying and field survey methods.
Knowledge of the principles and concepts of public planning, engineering or construction management.
Considerable knowledge of mathematics including algebra, trigonometry and plane geometry.
Knowledge of drafting, design, and computer assisted drafting and design.
Ability to perform field survey and office work associated with preparing calculations and operating survey equipment.
Ability to comprehend and prepare detailed layouts in the field from legal descriptions.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions and sketches.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.
Skill in the use and care of surveying instruments, computers and related equipment.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or an equivalent recognized certification supplemented by course work in surveying and field survey methods; three (3) years experience as a survey party chief; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience. A valid Florida driver's license at time of appointment.
SPECIAL INFORMATION
Applicants who possess or are able to obtain within six months of employment, a State of Florida License as a Registered Land Surveyor are preferred. Also preferred are applicants with PADI certification in SCUBA.
