NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work at the journey level in welding, soldering, and brazing at Port Everglades. Work involves electric welding, gas welding, Gas Metal Arc (GMA) and Gas Tungsten Arc (GTA) welding, and the fabrication of tools, structures and equipment. Assignments are received in oral and written form, frequently accompanied by sketches and blue prints. Work is reviewed by inspection during work process or upon completion of assignment for compliance with specifications and standards.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Welds, repairs and fabricates metal structures and equipment for Port facilities.
Preheats and cleans metals; cuts and fits materials for welding; repairs broken or cracked parts, fills holes and increases size of metal parts.
Cuts and welds machinery and equipment including trucks and automobile bodies, steam systems, brows, water box lids, pump and engine parts, trailer parts and heavy construction equipment.
Clamps broken parts together in jig or vise and welds them using gas or arc welding process, according to type and thickness of metal.
Maintains and makes minor repairs on welding equipment.
Assists in the preparation of blueprints and sketches for new construction projects.
Maintains various records including time records and daily activity log; prepares labor and material estimates, requisitions, and work reports.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the practices, materials, terminology, methods and tools of the welding trade.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the welding trade.
Knowledge of metallurgy and chemistry.
Ability to read sketches and shop drawings.

Skill in the use and care of equipment used in welding.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; including or supplemented by training and/or an apprenticeship in welding with certification in welding from a recognized authority; two (2) years experience as a journey level welder and/or pipe fitter; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment. Completion of welding certification and/or welding apprenticeship preferred.
