PORT EVERGLADES SWEEPER OPERATOR

NATURE OF WORK
 
This is skilled work in the operation of a motorized mechanical broom and vacuum sweeper used in maintaining the roads, sidewalks, yard areas, warehouse floors, dock aprons, and surface parking lots at Port Everglades.
 
Work involves the general cleaning of various areas at the Port with motorized sweepers and similar equipment. Operators are responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the equipment and for making adjustments necessary for the particular job. Supervision is received from a superior who inspects work in progress for proper equipment utilization and desired work results.
 
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
 
Operates the motorized mechanical broom and vacuum sweeper in assigned areas of Port Everglades.
 
Picks up debris manually to supplement and complement the motorized sweeper.
 
Performs operator pre-checks on equipment; checks lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, electrical systems, sweeper mechanism including street brushes for wear; makes necessary minor adjustments and reports malfunctions to Supervisor.
 
Performs clean up function including emptying sweeper hopper, removing debris, and washing equipment after each use daily.
 
Assists Supervisor in planning and scheduling the regular sweeping activities; maintains log on areas swept.
 
May perform lubrication, filter changes and light mechanical maintenance work on equipment.
 
May act as crew leader on clean up jobs as required.
 
Performs related work as required.
 
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
 
Knowledge of the operating characteristics of large motorized mechanical broom and vacuum sweepers or other heavy equipment.
 
Knowledge of safe driving techniques and the occupational hazards of motorized equipment operation.
 
Ability to operate the assigned motorized sweeper in the prescribed manner.
 
Ability to detect malfunctions while operating heavy equipment.
 
Ability to make minor adjustments and to do minor servicing of assigned equipment.
 
Ability to perform heavy manual labor, including lifting lumber, pallets, and debris from work areas for extended periods
in all weather conditions.
 
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
 
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
 
Skill in the operation of a motorized mechanical broom and vacuum sweeper or other heavy equipment.
 
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
 
Graduation from high school or equivalent recognized certification; two(2) years experience in the operation of motorized mechanical vacuum sweeper, other small sweepers and similar equipment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
 
Possession of a valid Florida Driver's License at time of appointment.
