TRAFFIC SIGNALS TECHNICIAN III

NATURE OF WORK

This is supervisory and highly skilled work in the installation and maintenance of electronic traffic control devices.

Work involves responsibility for supervising and participating in the installation, operation, and maintenance of electronic traffic control devices including communication network IP/Ethernet devices. Employees troubleshoot certain areas where breakdowns might occur and work on the more complex problems. The employee exercises considerable independence in planning and supervising assigned operations within the framework of established policies, regulations, and program objectives. Work is reviewed for effectiveness through conferences, observations, and the review of reports.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from Traffic Signals Technician II by the supervisory responsibilities and by the greater experience and training requirements.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Schedules and supervises the work of traffic signal technicians engaged in all aspects of traffic control device installation, maintenance, and operation; directs and participates in various field and shop activities.

Analyzes and maintains data used in timing existing and proposed traffic signal installation; recommends the purchase of electronic and electrical traffic control equipment.

Dispatches or personally responds to emergency calls relative to traffic signal malfunctions during regular working hours and specified standby periods.

Maintains a spare parts inventory of traffic signal components and requisitions replacements as needed.

May operate various vehicles as required for maintenance and installation of traffic control devices.

Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment employed in the maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the principles of electrical, electromechanical, and electronics theory as related to work assignments.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions involved in the work.

Knowledge of the principles of supervision and organization.

Knowledge of Local Area Networks/Wide Area Networks.

Ability to diagnose and supervise the repair of malfunctions in traffic signal and related equipment.

Ability to diagnose and supervise the repair of malfunctions in communications related equipment including routers, switches, video encoders, fiber optic and copper cable.

Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of subordinates and to instruct them in proper work methods and procedures.

Ability and understanding of communications equipment, IP Networking and Fiber Optic transmission.  

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

Skill in the use and care of the tools, equipment and materials employed in the work.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school supplemented by college level course work in electronic technology; four (4) years progressively responsible experience in the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical and electronic traffic control devices; two (2) years experience in troubleshooting and repairing network components in a communications environment, or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of an IMSA Level II Certificate and a valid Florida Class B Commercial Driver's License with air brakes endorsement is required.
