PHYSICIAN

NATURE OF WORK

This is responsible medical work. Plans and participates in the medical care of persons participating in a County health program or being treated in a County health care facility. Provides medical care and treatment for eligible persons.

 

Work involves performing general or specialized medical services in clinical examination, diagnosis, and treatment. Depending upon area of assignment, may prepare and presenting evidence in court and may develop medical, nutritional, and educational public health programs. Employees of this class exercise medical judgment and skill in the independent performance of their duties. All services are performed in accordance with laws of the State of Florida and established operating policies and procedures. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of results achieved, and depending upon the area of assignment, by the agency’s Treatment Director.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS Certain tasks may vary dependent upon the area of assignment.

Examines, diagnoses, and treats general or specialized medical problems of the eligible persons under a County health program and/or of patients in a County health care, substance abuse treatment, or mental health care facility.

 

Plans and develops medical, nutritional, hygiene, educational or health programs appropriate to the area of assignment

May provide supervision to other health care professionals in the provision of medial treatment or care as required for the area of assignment.

May document medical-legal evidence for legal defense and prosecution or present evidence in court appearances if required for the area of assignment.

May review and recommend public health program policies, practices, and procedures as required for the area of assignment.

 

Communicates with hospital, emergency room , and other physicians regarding patient care as needed; may also communicate with the agency’s Treatment Director regarding patient care as required for the area of assignment.

 

Prepares periodic evaluative reports on medical services.

 

Serves on committees as assigned.

 

Demonstrates knowledge of JCAHO, HIPAA, and DCF regulations as required by the areas of assignment.

 

May apply knowledge of addiction and treatment, buprenorphine treatment, or other specialized treatments as required for the area of assignment.

 

May provide after hours, on-call coverage or coordinate emergency medical or medical need responses for patients as assigned as required for the area of assignment.

Completes physician documentation such as progress notes, orders, history and physicals, and discharge summaries in a professional, legible, and timely manner in keeping with physician practice standards

May participate in interdisciplinary staff meetings as required to coordinate and review the delivery of patient care and related services as required for the area of assignment.

 

Abides by all safety and/or risk, infection control, and other guidelines.

 

Assists in ensuring that State and Federal regulations, and JCAHO or other accreditation standard/s adopted by the area of assignment, are met and maintained.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS    May vary according to area of assignment.

Knowledge of the modern principles and practice of, and current developments in, general medicine and/or medial speciality/ies appropriate to the area of assignment as well as knowledge of specialized phases of medicine related to assigned duties.

 

Knowledge of policies, practices and procedures of public health programs generally and medical best practices specific to and appropriate to the area of assignment.

 

Knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases, injuries, and psychiatric disorders.

 

Knowledge of medical terminology, medical pathology, and, as appropriate to the area of assignment, the composition of substances.

 

Knowledge of the diagnosis and treatment of a variety of diseases, injuries, and /or psychiatric disorders as required by the area of assignment.

 

Knowledge of laws and regulations pertaining to the specialized phases of medicine related to assigned duties which may include addiction medicine.

 

Knowledge of industrial and occupational medicine and application to problems encountered in work situations if required by the area of assignment.

 

Ability to diagnose and perform general and specialized medical treatments and examinations as required by the area of assignment.

Ability to interpret results of medical examinations and tests.

 

Ability to prepare clear and concise reports.

Ability to use computers and computer programs.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited school of medicine and completion of an approved residency appropriate to the area of assignment; three (3) years of experience in the practice of medicine, which may include residency and/or fellowship terms, with two (2) years of experience in an area appropriate to the area of assignment; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Licensed as a physician to practice medicine in the State of Florida as provided for in Chapters 458 and 459 of the Florida Statutes.   Depending upon area of assignment, may be required to obtain certification in Buprenorphine.
