NATURE OF WORK
This is advanced clerical and technical work in promoting the tourism industry with the Greater Ft. Lauderdale Convention and Visitors Bureau.
Work involves performing specialized clerical activities, arranging media tours and assisting in creating news releases and publications for travel agents, and the general public.
Employee in this class is required to work with considerable initiative in the absence of the superior.
Work requires the exercise of some independent judgement within the framework of established policies and program objectives. Work is performed under general supervision and is reviewed through conferences, reports, and observation of work performance.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Analyzes daily newspaper coverage, distributes to administrative staff, and maintains chronological files.
Responds to internet inquiries as well as any visitor complaints.
Maintains extensive color slide and video libraries available to media, hospitality industry and general public; selects images to appear in media articles, brochures, displays, internet, and travel guides.
Researches and updates existing press releases and distributes to local media, national, trade and international contacts; creates press kits and distributes to the media.
Assists Communications Manager with coordinating luncheons and educational seminars for hospitality industry.
Prepares invoices, travel vouchers, expenses and mileage reports.
Assists Communications Manager with collateral material research by gathering data and proofing.
Provides front desk reception relief.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of modern office practices and procedures.
Considerable knowledge of Business English, spelling and the requirements for media and press publicity materials.
Considerable knowledge of the clerical procedures applicable to the organizational activity to which assigned.
Knowledge of journalistic principles, practices and techniques of composing and editing publicity material.
Knowledge of basic research techniques, sources, and availability of information.
Ability to analyze and assemble information for press kits and media releases.
Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.
Skill in the operation of computerized equipment and other office machines.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from high school, supplemented by course work in communication, journalism or related field; four (4) years experience in clerical work; including two (2) years news writing, public relations or event planning; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
