COMPUTER SYSTEMS TECHNICIAN

NATURE OF WORK

This is technical work in the operation and implementation of automated systems in a division.

Work involves maintaining liaison with technical systems personnel to ensure the smooth operation of agency's computer system. Duties include assisting in the analysis, development, installation and administration of computer systems. Work may also involve responsibilities such as running applications and reports, maintaining system security and tracking inventory. Work is reviewed by an administrative superior through conferences and evaluation of tasks completed and results achieved.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Serves as liaison between information services staff (county and/or vendor) and division; makes preliminary diagnoses and applies recommended solutions to operating problems, and maintains systems and installs upgrades.

Assists with systems implementation; analyzes modifications requested; monitors systems operation and use; instructs agency personnel in the use of division applications.

Maintains equipment inventory and documentation; performs back-up procedures according to approved policies and procedures.

Designs forms used with applications, participates in the development and maintenance of data verification methods and standards.

Operates systems and runs applications to produce reports and other output utilized by agency staff and users.

May perform requirements analysis and initiate procurement of new or upgraded equipment.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the capabilities and requirements of automation system equipment.

Knowledge of the operating system specific to area of assignment.

Some knowledge of programming languages and logic.

Ability to coordinate with vendors and users and furnish advice on hardware related problems.

Ability to assist in analyzing work flow and procedures and identify areas for the application of automated improvements.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skill in the operation of computer and peripheral equipment.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school supplemented by training in computer science, programming or systems analysis; two (2) years experience in programming or automation technology; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
