REFUGEE OUTREACH COORDINATOR

NATURE OF WORK

 

This is professional work involving planning and conducting activities designed to familiarize target populations with the services available through the County’s Refugee Services program and to facilitate access to those services.   The incumbent will conduct intensive outreach and recruitment activities to maximize provision of services, subject to program budgets to targeted populations.

 

Work involves coordination of all activities designed to inform the refugee community of program services and develop contacts with other agencies and community groups.   Work also includes writing and editing of program newsletter and other outreach materials, development of advertising campaign, and tracking results of outreach efforts.   Employee exercises some initiative and judgment within established procedures and grant requirements.   Supervision is provided by a professional supervisor for completeness, consistency, production, and timeliness.

 

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

 

Writes content for client newsletters and program flyers.

 

Designs and edits newsletter, pamphlets, and other outreach materials.

 

Coordinates contacts and networking with other local agencies, churches, groups.

 

Writes and coordinates program press releases with Public Communications.

 

Conducts presentations about program services at community meetings, fairs, and other agency events.

 

Researches radio stations and other media that reach refugee community and works with business operations staff to negotiate advertising purchases.

 

Develops mailing list for client newsletter and other outreach campaigns.

 

Documents all outreach activity; prepares reports.

 

Updates information on program web pages.

 

Plans and coordinates program participation in health fairs and other outreach events.

 

Attends staff conferences for exchange of information and development of outreach strategies.

 

Compiles periodic fiscal reports of dollars expended and remaining by contracted media.

 

Prepares narrative and technical reports using basic computer office applications, including spreadsheets.

 

Performs related work as required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

 

Knowledge of local refugee community.

 

Knowledge of social service needs of refugees.

 

Some knowledge of factors relevant to successful job placement.

 

Some knowledge of the range of community agencies, programs, and resources available to clients.

 

Ability to communicate effectively in English and interpret on behalf of clients.

 

Ability to make presentations before client or community groups.

 

Ability to operate a personal computer using a variety of computer-based applications including basic office software and spreadsheets.

 

Ability to translate or arrange translation of outreach material content.

 

Ability to write clearly and concisely in English.

 

Ability to plan, coordinate and implement special projects and/or events.

 

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of BrowardCounty's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

 

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, marital status or political affiliation.

 

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

 

Graduation from an accredited four (4) year college or university, or foreign educational equivalent, with major course work in a field closely related to this assignment; two (2) years of experience in planning, coordinating, and implementing community relations and/or special events involving diverse populations; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

 

SPECIAL NECESSARY REQUIREMENT s

 

May be required to possess a valid Florida Driver’s License and to obtain and maintain authority to drive on County business.   F luency in English is required.   Fluency in appropriate foreign language(s) preferred.
