PARKS NATURALIST II

NATURE OF WORK

This is specialized and supervisory work aiding in the proper utilization, protection and appreciation of the natural resources in County parks and related natural areas impacted by development.

Work involves researching the human and natural history of each park, designing the interpretive services program, and conducting programs to promote public interest in the parks. Duties also include participation in park planning as it relates to ecology, natural resources, and aesthetics. Work may involve operating a nature center. Work is performed with considerable latitude within established policies and procedures. Work is reviewed through conferences, reports, observations of program effectiveness, and achievement of goals and objectives.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This position is distinguished from the position of Park Naturalist I by the supervisory responsibilities associated with the position as well as the additional experience required.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Performs necessary research and cataloging of human and natural resources of each park.

Develops resource management plans for parks.

Develops nature trails to best display the natural resources with proper respect for sensitive areas.

May operate and maintain a nature center.

Designs exhibits, trail booklets and displays to depict natural history and resources of each park.

Conducts tours for the public and presents interpretive talks.

Leads groups on walks to identify plants, animals, birds, fish, and insects and explains relationship of one to another.

Conducts educational nature programs outside the parks for schools, children's groups, garden clubs, retiree associations, and state and local conservation groups.

Reviews development and landscape plans for new and existing park sites and provides recommendations for area agencies.

Coordinates various park projects with volunteers to achieve additional interpretive goals.

May serve as a technical advisor on environmental issues.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge on the structure and function of natural areas.

Considerable knowledge of the flora and fauna of South Florida.

Considerable knowledge of developing displays, booklets and trailside exhibits.

Knowledge of nature photography.

Knowledge of park planning and development as related to ecology, natural resources, and aesthetics.

Ability to communicate effectively through various media.

Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work subordinates.

Ability to manage a nature center.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability, political affiliation or sexual orientation.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in biological or natural sciences, conservation, or related field; four (4) years experience as a naturalist, in environmental education or related field; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Florida Driver's license at time of appointment.
