NATURE OF WORK
This is subprofessional technical work in the interpretation and delivery of horticultural and urban pest control information to the residents of Broward County.
Work involves diagnosis of plant cultural, disease and insect problems with recommendation for cultural or chemical control measures based on current agricultural research information. Cultural information is provided for planting, fertilizing, irrigating, pruning and maintaining ornamentals, fruit trees, vegetables and annuals. Employee performs soil and water testing for pH and soluble salts as related to plant and lawn care. Employees in this class receive technical and professional supervision.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Diagnoses plant cultural, disease and pest problems; provides information to homeowners as to control measures and their practical application.
Identifies plant and household pests.
Provides information to homeowners about control measures and their practical application.
Maintains registry of plant specimens received and diagnosis.
Assists agents in the administration of restricted pesticide applicator "Core" pesticide exams.
Performs laboratory tests for soil and water analysis (pH and soluble salts); communicates results to clients.
Assists in the orientation of Master Gardner volunteers.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of ornamental and flowering plants recommended for South Florida.
Knowledge of cultural practices employed for the care and maintenance of ornamental, fruit and vegetable plants.
Knowledge of plant disease and insect pests, as well as chemicals and pesticides used for control.
Knowledge of pesticide regulations relating to homeowner application.
Ability to communicate information to clients in a courteous and informative manner.
Ability to emphasize to clients the importance of application according to label directions for environmental protection.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school supplemented by college level course work in horticulture or related field; experience in horticultural work; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
