NATURE OF WORK
This is entry level investigative work regarding unfair and deceptive trade practices.
Work involves receiving and investigating consumer complaints and related duties to ensure compliance with fair trade practices. Work is performed within established policies and procedures and subject to review upon completion.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Receives, analyzes and investigates consumer complaints.
Assists attorneys in preparation of cases where legal action becomes necessary.
Testifies in court concerning violations, addresses civic groups regarding fraudulent business practices.
Maintains surveillance of advertising media for misleading information.
Assists in research studies appropriate for the education and protection of the consumer.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of current laws, literature and developments in the consumer protection field.
Knowledge of sales promotion techniques and advertising practices used in the County.
Knowledge of research and analysis techniques and sources of information in the consumer protection field.
Ability to prepare concise reports of field investigations and enforcement activities for use in litigation.
Ability to communicate goals, objectives, and methods of consumer protection practices to individuals, community groups and agencies.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, political affiliation, familial status, disability, sexual orientation, pregnancy, or gender identity and expression.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Graduation from an accredited four year college or university with major course work in public or business administration, education, journalism or related field; six (6) months public contact work experience; or any equivalent combination of relevant training and experience.
