NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled work of the journey level in the installation, maintenance, adjustment, modification and repair of automotive electronics and related equipment.
Work involves performing skilled tasks in electrical repairs of automobiles, trucks, trailers, emergency vehicles and other related equipment. Assignments are received from a technical supervisor in the form of oral instructions and written service orders. Work is inspected for quality of workmanship while in progress and upon completion.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This classification is distinguished from Automotive Electrical Technician I by the certification and greater experience requirements.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Overhauls emergency light systems, wire harnesses and repairs lights, sirens, starters, alternators and other related equipment.
Inspects, repairs, overhauls and assembles automotive electrical equipment; uses hand and power driven tools and equipment such as grinder, drills, and other shop tools and equipment.
Makes repairs to charging systems; maintains records and prepares statistical reports.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the principles, methods, materials, tools and procedures as applied to the automotive electrical trade.
Knowledge of federal and state DOT and other applicable emergency vehicles legal specifications.
Knowledge of the operating principles of gasoline and diesel engines and of repair and maintenance characteristics of a wide variety of automotive equipment.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to diagnose defects and failures of equipment and make repairs.
Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
DESIRABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Graduation from high school; experience in automotive electrical systems; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT
A.S.E.(automotive and heavy duty truck electrical) certification, and a valid Florida driver's license.
