NATURE OF WORK
This is manual work in the operation and minor maintenance of county drawbridges.
Work involves the responsibility for operating a mechanical bridge in such a way as to ensure safe passage of waterway, automotive and pedestrian traffic. Work involves performing related semiskilled mechanical tasks involved in the operation and maintenance of a bridge. Work is reviewed by frequent inspection and by review of the records kept by the employee.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Maintains watch for approaching water traffic and operates bridge and traffic control devices in response to proper boat signals.
Keeps records of daily bridge operations and prepares required reports.
Inspects mechanical and electrical devices for defects or malfunctions, noting and correcting if possible.
Maintains bridge lighting by turning bridge lights off and on at proper times and insuring that burned-out lights and fuses are replaced.
Keeps the bridgehouse clean and occasionally, cuts weeds and sweeps bridge deck.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the rules and regulations controlling the operation of drawbridges spanning navigable waters of the county.
Some knowledge of the operation of power driven drawbridges, heavy electrical motors and power driven hoisting machinery and equipment.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Ability to read and comprehend standard procedures and practices of bridgetending operations.
Ability to keep simple records and to prepare reports.
Ability to react promptly and correctly in emergency situations.
Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.
Skill in the use of simple mechanical tools to maintain and adjust motors and other bridge machinery.
REQUIRED EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Successful completion of job related tests.
