NATURE OF WORK

This is highly skilled work in the operation of a finish grader or a finish dragline crane.

Work involves the operation of a finish grader and a finish dragline crane used in public works maintenance and construction projects. Work requires a high degree of manipulative skill and adherence to extremely close engineering standards. Supervision is received from a superior who inspects work in progress and checks for efficient equipment operation and compliance with engineering standards.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This classification is distinguished from Equipment Operator IV by the types of equipment utilized, the supervisory responsibilities, and the greater experience requirements.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Operates finish grader to finish roadway and other final grade construction projects; finishes lime rock base to within one-quarter inch tolerance.

Operates and rigs finish dragline crane used in construction operations for digging, widening, and cleaning waterways and drainage ditches.

Performs operator prechecks on equipment; checks lubricants, cooling systems, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.

Makes necessary minor adjustments and reports malfunctions to supervisor.

May act as lead person; assists supervisor in coordinating vehicle and heavy equipment preventative maintenance schedules with maintenance service personnel.

Instructs equipment operators in the proper operation of heavy equipment vehicles.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the operation and functions of a finish grader or a finish dragline crane.

Thorough knowledge of the maintenance and safety requirements applicable to a finish grader or a finish dragline crane and large motorized construction equipment.

Ability to detect malfunctions in heavy construction equipment.

Ability to make major adjustments and to perform major maintenance to heavy equipment.

Ability to perform work according to extremely close engineering specifications.

Ability to serve the public and fellow employees with honesty and integrity in full accord with the letter and spirit of Broward County's Ethics and Conflict of Interest policies.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public, co-workers, elected and appointed officials and members of diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds regardless of race, religion, age, sex, disability or political affiliation.

Skill in the operation of a finish grader or a dragline crane.

DESIRABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

Graduation from high school; thorough experience in operating heavy duty earth moving equipment, including some experience in operating a finish grader or a finish dragline crane; or any equivalent combination of training and experience.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT

Possession of a valid Florida Class A or B Commercial Drivers License depending on area of assignment.
