2010 - An Exciting Beginning

Greetings and Happy New Year! I am most honored to serve as the Vice-Mayor of Broward County this year. Over the next twelve months I will work to stabilize Broward County's economy, create more job opportunities and increase efforts to attract sustainable businesses to our area. I believe that the economy will rebound this year and I want to make sure that Broward County is well positioned to take advantage of all opportunities that will lead us to economic recovery.

One very important tool in that effort is the New Targeted Industries Study. The Commission hired a consultant more than a year ago to conduct a study that would assess Broward's business climate and identify industries that would best benefit and compliment our region. The detailed analysis will be shared with our cities and business partners for review and comments. I supported hiring a nationally renowned economic consultant to conduct this study and will work to make sure that we take full advantage of the information and recommendations.

Broward County is sure to be the center of worldwide attention as the 2010 Pro Bowl and the 2010 Super Bowl comes to town. Both games will be staged at Land Shark Stadium. The headquarters for the Super Bowl media will be at the Broward County Convention Center and reporters from around the world will be here to cover the events. NFL Sponsors will be headquartered at the Diplomat for both games. Their presence and a substantial increase in the number of visitors who come here for these sporting events will surely bring millions of dollars to our area.

Broward County recently welcomed Virgin America airlines to the Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport with non-stop flights to and from Los Angeles and San Francisco. In addition, JetBlue announced non-stop service to San Francisco from Fort Lauderdale, Midwest Airlines announced daily service from Milwaukee to Fort Lauderdale. Allegiant Air also announced non-stop service to and from Grand Rapids, Michigan. These are all quality low-cost air carriers who bring jobs and investment to Broward County. Condor Airlines just announced service from Frankfort, Germany to Fort Lauderdale which will bring both business and leisure travelers to our area.

Port Everglades continues to receive incredible accolades. The Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce recently awarded Port Everglades the International Business Leadership Award in the Joint Venture category. Port Everglades in Broward County and Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. headquartered in Miami-Dade County developed a strategic alliance that resulted in the world's largest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas, homeporting at Port Everglades year-round. Cruise season continues with the arrivals of MSC Poesia, the Seabourn Odyssey and the Celebrity Equinox who debuted at Port Everglades in November. Port Everglades expects more than 3.4 million passengers during 2010 and more homeported cruise ships than any cruise port worldwide.

If you've been watching the Broward County Commission meetings, please note that the re-broadcasts that usually air on Sunday have now changed to Friday at 5:30 p.m.

And the seasonal food drives that I have initiated over the years are now being held year round because the need is so great. Please drop off non-perishable foods at any Broward County government building or library.
