Broward County’s Beach Renourishment Project (Segment III)
Week ending August 28, 2005

During the past week, Great Lakes Dredge and Dock placed 41,217 cubic yards of sand onto the beach at Hollywood, lengthening the constructed beach by about 300 feet.  A stockpile containing approximately 3,300 cubic yards of sand was constructed at Michigan St. The sand will be transported to John U. Lloyd Beach State Park for use as foundation for machinery in the construction of the groin field.

The beach is now constructed from the Broward/Miami-Dade County line at Hallandale Beach to the public parking lot between Johnson St. and Michigan St. in Hollywood, a distance of approximately 2.9 miles. Beach construction proceeds north along Hollywood’s beach. To date, 52 percent of the linear distance of beach has been completed. Construction operations ceased from August 24 through August 28 due to Hurricane Katrina.

Groin S-3, the southernmost structure at John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, is nearing completion, with only a short section of stem to be finished. Stone-filled mattress and rock deployment continued on Groin S-2.

Post-Katrina assessments are underway.
