Report:  2014 Broward County Affordable Housing Needs Assessment

The Metropolitan Center at Florida International University (FIU), in collaboration with the Broward Housing Council, published the 2014 Broward County Affordable Housing Needs Assessment.  The study analyzes current owner and renter housing supply and demand data in Broward County and predicts future supply and demand based on Department of Economic Opportunity’s (DEO) projections of industry and employment growth.  Twenty-three key findings were developed from the data, including that almost 50 percent of all households in Broward County are currently cost-burdened and residents are spending over 60 percent of their income on a combination of housing and transportation costs.  More…

Community of Seniors and Foster Children Prospers in Portland

Bridge Meadows, in Portland, Oregon, is a diverse community which provides 36 affordable housing units for low income seniors and adoptive families of three or more foster care children.  The development incorporates green features, community meeting rooms, social spaces, and bicycle parking.  In an effort to create an intergenerational environment, seniors are required to volunteer 100 hours with the Bridge Meadows’ foster children in areas such as arts, recreation, and cooking.  Staff has noticed great success in the mixed community; seniors often volunteer more than their required hours, families assist elders and bonds have strengthened, improving the lives of both seniors and families.  More…

Ribbon Cutting Ceremony in Unincorporated Broward Wins Award of Excellence
July 3, 2014

The Broward County Housing Finance and Community Development Division (HFCDD) is the recipient of a 2014 National Association of County Information Officers (NACIO) Award of Excellence for its Ribbon Cutting Ceremony Campaign.  On December 6, 2013, the HFCDD held a Ribbon Cutting Event to celebrate the completion of one of sixteen new affordable homes in the unincorporated area of Broward County. Funding for the project was provided by the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) and Disaster Recovery Initiative (DRI) Grant, both administered by the HFCDD.  The event was an opportunity to promote public awareness of these federal funded programs and to celebrate new homeownership, the continued success of public and private partnerships, and to thank all involved in this massive project.   More…

The Federal Housing Administration (FHA) published “Doing Business with FHA” and “Quality Control, Oversight, and Compliance” as additions to their sSingle-family housing policy handbook, “The Drafting Table.”  The supplements were created to help facilitate FHA lenders to qualify potential borrowers while complying with policy requirements.   Lenders are invited to submit feedback to FHA until July 29, 2014.  More…
