The Grants Section had a particularly busy year with numerous grants, workshops and programs. The grants section ensures that monies allocated through State, County and private funding, is adequately and dynamically filtered through to the arts and cultural entities that can use it most effectively. Through a series of workshops and community outreach ventures, the section educates the public on how to apply for grants, and maximize application and program success.

Additional workshops included: Program Evaluation, Cultural Democracy. A series of Cultural Diversity forums targeted specific diverse members of the artistic community for sessions in networking and feedback; Humanities Grantwriting workshop looked at grant applications available through the Florida Humanities Council; Becoming Who You Are, a professional development workshop for new and emerging arts organizations and artist groups; and Community Arts Centers: - A Reality—What’s Involved, which focused on how to start and operate visual art centers for the benefit of both artists and the public.

Annual workshops returned, including the week-long Grantsmanship Training Center Workshop in August, to cover all aspects of researching grants, writing grant proposals and negotiating with funding sources. The Florida Division of State Cultural Affairs Division held a grant writing workshop to provide guidance on how to prepare and apply for state grants.  

In April, Emerging Arts Leaders featured speaker Trudi Van Dyke, director of The Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, VA. This initiative aims to identify and cultivate the next generation of arts leaders in America.

Exciting fellowships were given as well.  Three Broward County artists were awarded the annual South Florida Cultural Consortium Visual and Media Artist Fellowship Award—Richard LaBarbera, Thomas Nolan and Geoffrey Thomas were among nine chosen in the five-county area.
