Title:  "Sky Fishing"

Medium:  Video

Length:  8 minutes, 46 seconds

Year Installed:  2008

Venue:  Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International Airport

Description

Kyle Trowbridge’s Sky Fishing uses the perspective of flight to show a different, microscopic view of Broward County by attaching 2.4 GHz cameras to clusters of balloons filled with helium. The result is a very expansive view that is typical through a window seat on a plane, and created to instill a thought-provoking and contemplative artwork that will ride along in the minds of those flying out of the airport.

Artist Statement

"Sky Fishing is a piece about borders, neighborhoods, residents and their roles, provincial existence physically and mentally, expansive horizons, and community. The good, the bad, and the ugly all hang their hats here and help comprise the setting for a story that is our lives. And while it is difficult for many of us to see past our own existence, challenged by the vastness of our surroundings, it is we as a collective that constitute the larger picture and establish community borders."

"Although, as quickly as we define these boundaries, we realize that just on the other side of the proverbial fence there are infinite amount of individuals and communities that simultaneously continue to advance across the earth’s lands and seas. Ours’ is just a role, one of many, that separates us as individuals, yet connects us as residents in the past, present, and future."

Relationship of the artwork to its site:
"The majority of Sky Fishing is shot using an aerial perspective. A perspective that provides a very expansive view that is atypical to the vantage point we, as individuals in relation to or surroundings, are familiar with. Although, this perspective is available through that of a window seat on an airplane. It is my hope to create a thought provoking and contemplative piece that will ride along in the minds of those flying out of the Ft. Lauderdale/Hollywood Airport as they note the similarities that they have seen in the piece as well as the increase in scope from their seats – reminding these travelers how small we as individuals can be in the grand scheme of things."
