Chicago-based artist Barry Tinsley uses the palm tree as the inspiration for design elements in this pair of sculptures. Placed outdoor by a pathway along the north bank of the New River, the sculptures welcome visitors to the Riverwalk complex, a popular entertainment destination in Fort Lauderdale.
"Historically, trees were the inspiration for original column design. The Egyptians used papyrus motifs for column design in early temples. Cascade Arch uses the palm tree as the inspiration for elements in the design. The two column forms were placed opposite each other along the Riverwalk to suggest a portal or entrance to a new space for the viewer. The cascading arch forms were located to imply a visually completed space between the two columns. The materials, bronze and granite, are traditional sculptural materials with a long history of use. They are known for their quality and longevity."
