Going by the Book
Every child loves to make a book. With this in mind, the facilitator will provide students with innovative lessons using the art of Creative Bookmaking to encourage a love of writing. Through a variety of hands on activities including, but not limited to Shape Books, Accordion Fold Books, Hot Dog Books, and Footwear Books, the creative bookmaking style becomes the springboard for creative writing. Thus, visual arts and the child’s natural love of writing form a partnership to encourage creative thinking in the intermediate grade levels. Students will be encouraged to use a variety of graphic organizers to organize their thoughts as they develop and edit their work previous to completing the final copy which will become the content of their book.

Integrating the Arts & Academics Hands on workshops will provide classroom teachers with a variety of unique lessons using visual art, music and movement to assist students in mastery of the language arts curriculum. Teachers will create samples for future lessons and share ideas for their implementation.
All lessons require a minimum of materials ensuring that all teachers can present these lessons within the classroom environment.
The following are a few sample lesson ideas presented in the 4 hr. workshop:
- A picture is worth a thousand words- how to use a painting as a prompt for storytelling (all grade levels)
- Round and round it goes, but what story we’ll create no one knows – a music, movement and visual arts activity rolled up in one lesson. (Grades 3 – 6)
- Let the music play. It has so much to say. – Music and visual arts help develop understanding of beginning, middle and end in story writing (Grades 3 – 6)
- Autumn Leaves – Collage technique is used to encourage poetry writing.
- All About Me Book – the perfect way to start a new school year or encourage friendship and understanding of our differences and similarities (Pre K – grade 6)
