Program Overview

The Emerging Cultural Leaders Program is an exciting new initiative of the Broward Cultural Council. This program aims to cultivate Broward County’s next generation of cultural leadership by focusing attention on people who have the will and desire to develop cultural leadership skills. The initiative presents an excellent way for young professionals to enhance leadership skills, build relationships with business and community leaders, and productively contribute to civic life, cultural development, and gain recognition within causes that stir their passion.

The Broward-based program targets, but is not restricted to professionals 21-40 years of age, who have an interest and desire to advance the mission of the Cultural Council. Over a two (2) year period, participants are provided leadership development to increase their understanding of the ways that cultural organizations build community and enhance quality of life. Participants who successfully complete the program become eligible to receive recommendation for volunteer leadership positions within cultural organizations and councils.

Upon acceptance into the Program, participants are required to attend a series of meetings and workshops to help them gain understanding and knowledge of the cultural industry.

Program Benefits

Over a two (2) year period, participants are provided leadership development to increase their understanding of the ways that cultural organizations build community and enhance quality of life.  Participants who successfully complete the Program become eligible to receive recommendation for board membership of a cultural organization and/or recommendation to a Broward County Commissioner as a potential candidate to be appointed to the Broward Cultural Council.  However, such recommendations do not guarantee the appointments.

Upon acceptance into the Program, participants are required to attend a series of meetings and workshops to help them gain an understanding of, and assist with becoming knowledgeable in the following areas

  • The current state of the arts in Broward County, Florida, and U.S.
  • The economic and social impact of creative economy, cultural tourism, and public art and design
  • How business can prosper in partnership with the arts
  • Roles that board members of arts organizations play in governance including: strategic planning, marketing, fundraising, financial management & advocacy
  • How to apply the information presented throughout the program as a leader in the cultural community
  • How to successfully integrate the arts as a means to revitalize, reform, and renew communities
  • The role arts and cultural organizations play in fostering cross-cultural understanding

There will be quarterly meetings and networking events and participants will receive assignments to one or more of the Broward Cultural Committees and/or assignments in areas such as:

  • Advocacy
  • Artists Hall of Fame
  • Arts Education
  • Finance
  • Cultural Diversity
  • Executive Committee
  • Planning
  • Public Relations
  • Micro Credit Committee
  • Global Arts and Culture
  • Council Member Assignments

Following completion of the required meetings, participants are then provided opportunities to assist in the implementation of programs and committee work, and will receive recognition through the Broward Cultural Division’s web site and other public relations venues.

Program Period: 2008 – 2010

Application Submittal: March 15 - April 30, 2008
Application Review: April - May, 2008
Notice of Acceptance:May 2008

Program Start Date:June 5, 2008

*Recognition ceremony at Broward Cultural Council meeting, followed by orientation meeting

Council Assignments: January 2009
Recognition at Broward County Commission Meeting:January or February, 2009
Quarterly Emerging Cultural Leaders Meetings: Beginning September 2008

*Additional Emerging Cultural Leaders meetings to be scheduled as needed.
