Teaching Artist Recognition Award Overview & Guidelines
Teaching artists are crucial to the sustainability and advancement of arts education. To increase public awareness of the importance of arts education in our everyday lives, the Arts Teacher of the Year Program has expanded to recognize and promote not only school-based arts teachers, but also teaching artists working throughout Broward County schools and communities. The Teaching Artist Recognition Award honors an outstanding teaching artist who has demonstrated dedication, achievement and professionalism in the arts education field. The recipient of this award will be presented with a recognition plaque and a cash gift.
Who is eligible?
Teaching artists who are listed in Broward Cultural Division’s Arts Education Directory.
Who may nominate?
Representatives of Broward County schools, government entities and organizations that have utilized the services (including partnerships and collaborations) of the nominated teaching artist more than once within the past 24 months. A signed Nomination Letter, Nomination Form and Nomination Questionnaire must be submitted
A teaching artist may self-nominate provided they are listed Broward Cultural Division’s Arts Education Directory. Self-nominated teaching artists must submit a nomination letter and completed questionnaire from a minimum of three (3) hiring entities (schools, government entities and organizations) with whom the teaching artist has worked in the past 24 months.
How is the Award recipient selected?
Broward Cultural Division verifies that all nominees are eligible and that the nomination information is complete. Nominations are then forwarded to the Arts Teacher of the Year selection committee.
If no nominees meet the criteria for the award, a recipient will not be selected.
What is the deadline for nomination?
Nomination packets must be submitted to the Broward Cultural Division digitally on or before October 18, 2013.
Nominees will be confirmed by October 31, 2013.
When will the award be presented?
The recipient of the Teaching Artist Recognition Award will be announced at the 2013 Arts Teacher of the Year event on November 6, 2013 at Broward Center for the Performing Arts. All nominees will be acknowledged at the event.
How are awards publicized?
Press releases announcing the selection of the award recipient will be sent by Broward Cultural Division through its distribution channels which include media outlets, major institutional partners, government officials and community leaders, schools and community organizations.
Announcement of the award recipient will also be included in a variety of publications produced by the Cultural Division.
The award recipient will also receive a special designation in their Arts Education Directory listing.

The Nomination Letter should be no more than two (2) pages and should describe and give example(s) of how the teaching artist demonstrates the following through their work.
Contribution of personal effort and time beyond the normal teaching duties in promoting arts education.
Ability to meet the needs and interests of students, youth and adults in a creative manner that brings about learning, growth and development in all areas.
Commitment and dedication to students that is characterized through patience, understanding compassion and helpfulness.
Who should write nomination and support letters and complete the questionnaire?Nomination Packets (form, questionnaire and support letters) should be completed by the individual making the nomination, except if the nominee is self-nominating.

The deadline to submit all contents of the nomination packet is 11:59 pm, Friday, October 18, 2013.
