Sees through Their Eyes "Sees through Their Eyes," using Zora Neale Hurston's 1937 novel "Their Eyes Were Watching God," develops an appreciation for cultural arts through reading, writing, and the art of dance. Based on the novel's theme students will interpret the written work through dance and the times of African Americans in rural south in the early 20th century and how its message applies to today's world. (Please note: Workshop process may be presented for all reading levels using age appropriate reading materials. Example given is for students in grades 9-12.)
The educational goals of the service provided are to integrate language arts and dance through the following:
- By developing reading skills for interpretation of studies in symbolism and analysis.
- By helping students analyze the meaning from a wide range of text.
- By helping students develop writing processes effectively.
- By teaching students to communicate ideas and information effectively.
- By teaching students to respond critically to fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama and dance.
- By helping students develop their ideas into written, oral and dance formats.
The specific methods used to achieve these educational goals are:
- Pre-Discussions and Handout Assignments will be given before each session to navigate students creatively through the process.
- In Class Discussion students will be grouped together in class to discuss the use of the writer's symbolic messages within the assigned text.
- Response Strategies which include rereading, note taking, summarizing, outlining, writing a formal report, and related what is read to their own experiences and feelings.
The indicators of the progress will be:
- Student worksheets will reflect the depth of understanding analyses and symbolism in the work.
- Students identify and demonstrate movement elements in performing dance.
- Students show ability of using improvisation to generate movement for composition.
The assessment methods used will be:
- Daily observation of students.
- Student's pre and post testing.
- End of session class presentation.

Dance for All Seasons
"Dance for All Seasons" is a workshop series presented to grades K through 2nd by using creative movement, the music of Vivaldi and weather sounds, the science concepts of seasons will come alive. The heat of Summer, the falling leaves of Autumn, the windy, snowy Winter and rebirth of Spring will all take on new meaning through the art of dance. The hour performance includes an interactive segment in which students will be called upon to participate and demonstrate what they have learned.
