Goals/Policy

Committee meeting of people.
The Broward Cultural Division is dedicated to enhancing the cultural environment of Broward County through the development of the arts.

Established in 1977 by the Broward County Commission, the Council is the central coordinating agency for the arts, serving as liaison between cultural organizations, government agencies and the private sector. The 21-member Council recommends programs and the distribution of government and private resources for the visual arts, performing arts, literary arts, museums and festivals.

Each January the Broward Cultural Division adopts a list of goals following a December public workshop. The goals are from the CreativeBROWARD 2020—the council's ten-year plan. Sub Committees of the council are formed to establish objectives, strategies and budgets to meet the goals.

The goals for 2013 are as follows:

  • Provide diverse artistic, cultural, educational, and historical amenities and programs that contribute to a vibrant, multi-cultural and economically-viable community.
  • In coordination with our community partners, maintain and enhance a premier system of parks and libraries that provide a variety of recreational, cultural and learning opportunities for our residents and visitors.
  • Create a series of maps of arts and cultural assets, which include all of Broward’s arts organizations and creative industries, by legislative and commission districts and by municipality. (#20)
  • Work in collaboration to strengthen Broward County’s arts education coalition with the School Board and community-based partners. (#36)
  • Add one County Commissioner (not currently serving on the Broward Cultural Council or Tourist Development Council) to serve on the Cultural Tourism Committee. (#11)
  • Create an International Festival of Creativity with two components:  high-profile curated events and a longer “Fringe Festival” of self-selected local events.  (#31)
  • Joint effort between the Public Relations Committee and the Public Art & Design Committee to raise community awareness of the accomplishments and efforts of the Public Art & Design Program. (#38)
