A 911 dispatcher will come on the line and ask questions to determine the type of emergency and the level of response to be sent.

When a 911 call is made from a land line, the caller's phone number and address are automatically displayed on the dispatcher’s computer screen. When the call is made from a cellular phone, the caller’s phone number and approximate location is automatically displayed. In either case, the 911 dispatcher will ask the caller to verify the information.

If reporting an emergency from a cellular phone, it is important that the caller provide the 911 dispatcher with as much location information as possible, including city name, street names, direction you are traveling (i.e., north or south) and nearby landmarks (i.e., a shopping center or restaurant), so emergency responders can locate and provide assistance more effectively.
